All right, back to Star
This is where I ran into problems, which are now beginning to solve themselves. After playing Planescape Torment I have begun to appreciate a personal story. A story about a person. No great destinies, no world-shattering conspiracies. Just a man with a mission. That will be the core of the story.
Other aspects. Space Rangers had an underlying deadline, especially when playing with aggressive Dominators. I know that time limits are a great video game sin, but have we really explored everything they can offer to the players? A deadline gives a reason to be swift and keep a tight pace. A definite deadline, but one that still gives enough leeway to do everything that is necessary.
The game will have a party consisting of different, interesting NPC:s. Bioware does this well. The people the player will hang around with are generally interesting and colourful in their games. KotoR had moments when the characters would converse with another, and I would like to see more of them.
I had envisioned one of my homebrew settings for the original concept, but now I spliced my other small idea to it. In short, Aetherborn, people with connection to an alternate dimension, can use the connection to perform seemingly magical abilities and can teleport themselves. With enough energy at their disposal, they can take proportionally bigger things with them. Thus, with a single Aetherborn and a huge Unobtainum-generator, interstellar travel is possible. Man colonised areas around the solar system and soon the pioneers wanted to be independent of Earth. Two human factions emerged and have been in a constant state of conflict when scientists perfected the (somewhat stable) wormhole technology. Then an alien coalition show up, are immidiately dissed by xenophobic humans and engage war on the entire human race. Since it takes more than just some aliens to unify humanity, there are three factions fighting each other now. And in this setting our story happens; A band of people following the player character, trying to find something or someone.
So, we now have:
- A story about a man and his quest
- A physical deadline in the story and gameplay
- Partymembers with unique stories.
- A setting
That will do for now.
